On-Metal RFID Tags as Standard for All Vehicle Models

All vehicles manufactured at the Neckarsulm site are fitted with a UHF RFID transponder. Since December 2020 – and the start of production of the all-electric e-tron GT – on-metal RFID tags have been used. The tag is attached directly to the panel of the car body without spacers. The tag's design ensures that it takes advantage of the physical properties of the metal. The metal body acts as an antenna. In the future, OMT tags will become standard in the production of new vehicle models throughout the company.

The UHF RFID tag is attached to a fixed location on the right rear end of the vehicle during the first production step in the body construction process and remains on the vehicle throughout the entire production process. The tag contains an ID with which all relevant information such as model, paintwork and motorization can be requested and retrieved from a central IT system. The high degree of individualization of vehicles places great demands on assembly. There is a high degree of variance. The vehicles are identified at relevant points. The vehicle ID is linked to the transport medium. This enables the body to be tracked with positional accuracy. Configuration according to customer specifications is thus efficiently ensured.
