How to choose the right RFID reader antenna?

The RFID reader antenna is used to activate the RFID tags and transmit the information to the reader. It is one of the key elements of RFID identification, but finding the right reader antenna for your needs can be very complex. Here are some basic elements to define in order to have a high-performance RFID system.

Evaluate the need for an internal or external reader antenna

The internal reader antenna is integrated in the RFID reader housing. Theses RFID readers are essentially mobile such as the MBA5-P43. In this case, the operator can move with the device and read all RFID tags within a defined perimeter thanks to a manual activation.

The second, the external reader antenna, such as the BRA-01, has to be fixed to a platform and connected to an RFID reader. External RFID reader antennas have various shapes and sizes to perfectly suit with your needs. These external RFID reader antennas can then be more powerful (gain) and therefore useful to obtain a greater range.

Define the polarization of the RFID reader antenna

The RFID reader antenna polarization is defined by its electric field. There are two different types of polarization: linear and circular. It is essential that the antenna and RFID tags in communication are identically polarized to avoid power damage.

We talk about linear polarization (vertical or horizontal) when the electric field is straight during spread. On the other hand, circular polarization is defined as the electric field describing a circle during the spread. Circular polarization is recommended if the tags RFID are randomly oriented.

Choose the frequency of the RFID reader antenna

RFID operates in 3 frequencies: low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF) or ultra-high frequency (UHF). Radio frequencies are different depending on countries/areas in the world. The RFID equipment (antenna, reader and RFID tags) has to be set to the same frequency otherwise the RFID system will not be functional.

Determine the antenna performance

The more efficient the antenna is (gain, efficiency…), the more extensive the reading capacity is. A broadband antenna is required when used on a large scale (Europe, US…).

RFID reader antennas characteristics are multiple. They are not designed to meet specific applications. It is therefore necessary to accurately assess all the constraints and needs to find the RFID reader antenna that will perfectly meet your expectations.
