Think WIOT DAY 01-2022: Retail & Logistics

What does it mean to be “Embedded”?

Emmanuel Arene will be talking about embedded UHF RFID. But what exactly does this mean? There are four pillars of an embedded tag:

Embedded tags should be integrated “inside” the product, rather than be detachable. 90% of the approximate twelve billion RFID tags are applied to garments, apparel and footwear are detachable tags. Replacing these with embedded tags allows the brand to follow their products from manufacture to the sales floor. After a customer buys the product, further uses are enabled to promote customer engagement.

Tags that have been embedded within the garment should also be durable and able to withstand chemicals, mechanical stress and high temperatures to prevent one-shot-usage. This promotes sustainability.

Naturally, embedded tags should also be non-intrusive so that product integrity is guaranteed. The tags must also be compatible with the manufacturing process and must not change the design of the product when embedded.

Another trending topic in retail is sustainability. Uses of these tags after sale include providing the customer with information about the product, including where it can be recycled. This enables a circular economy.

What are the Benefits of Embedded RFID?

By embedding garments with RFID, brands can provide a secure ID, or unique electronic product code (EPC) to each garment. This is particularly useful for product lifecycle monitoring which broadens the range of use cases.

The ROI of RFID is accelerated and benefits for stakeholders along the value chain are maximized. In essence, embedded RFID is a game changer and enabler for new business models and enhanced customer experience.
