Airport Security: Zone-D Laser Sensor from DENSO is a Success

The Zone-D laser sensor has been installed in approximately 500 projects in Asia!

Increasing global threats have forced governments to employ high levels of security, especially at airports and places such as public institutions, ports and transportation systems. A recent report from Markets and Markets projected the size of the homeland security and emergency management market to grow from 623.1 billion US-Dollars in 2020 to 846.5 billion US-Dollars by 2025.

The market growth is driven by various factors, leading to adoption of new technologies and upgrading outdated equipment and infrastructure.

DENSO, part of the Toyota group and expert for scanners and handheld terminals, has recently launched the Zone-D laser security sensor system, which detects accurately the position of moving objects. Thus, the laser sensor can protect all types of perimeters reliably, including airports.

DENSO’s Zone-D laser sensor can be connected to security equipment such as PTZ cameras, lights or sirens, and it can differentiate between people, animals, cars, and other objects. The object filtering system enables the laser sensor to avoid false alarms. Especially at airports, where the weather conditions need to be taken into account, this makes a big difference when comparing security systems and laser sensors in particular.

Zone-D Scanner manages Surveillance System at International Airport in Japan

The Zone-D security system from the experts for handhelds, scanners and sensors has been installed at approximately 500 projects in Asia, for example, in Japan, Singapore and Thailand.

One successful project was realized at the Nagoya Airport in Japan. The project’s objective was to secure the take-off/landing area against intruders. The key benefits of installing the Zone-D laser sensor from DENSO are the flawless functionality and the substantial reduction of false alarms caused by extreme weather conditions, such as typhoons. Three hundred vertical-mounted Zone-D laser sensors are now installed at the international airport and manage the airport security system.

In addition, a major advantage at this airport in particular is the fact that rain and fog are no issue for the innovative security device. Furthermore, the Zone-D laser sensor is reliable under all lighting conditions. It can detect objects in the dark or at illuminances of up to 100,000 lux.

How the Zone-D Scanner works in order to monitor and secure Areas

Viv Bradshaw, Manager Business Development Europe and Technology Consultant at DENSO WAVE EUROPE, explains: “Our Zone-D laser sensor covers not only a wide area but also detects on the surface, which makes it hard for intruders to avoid being detected.” In numbers, the Zone-D laser sensor detects an area of about 60 by 30 meters. When combining numerous Zone-D laser sensors, as it has been done at the airport in Japan, the coverage area can be enlarged.

The areas can be clustered in individual zones. Hence, different areas can be set with different detection rules. For example, a green zone can be defined as a safe area, where no particular alarm needs to be activated, while a red zone indicates special protection to be enforced.

The Zone-D security system sends notifications immediately to the user’s computer or monitoring area. In detail, when an intruder is detected, the connected camera automatically zooms in to track and record the intruder’s actions. At the same time, the system sends a notification to the person in charge.

Another option for further protection is to install an intimidation system, meaning lights, flashlights and/or sirens can be activated when necessary. In addition, vocal warnings can be made remotely and even electric locks can be engaged in order to prevent any damage that might be caused.

All of the possibilities mentioned above are implemented in real-time, while viewing the intruder’s actions on a live video feed. The videos can be verified via connected portable devices such as PCs and smartphones.

The successful projects in Asia show that the Zone-D security system can protect areas and people from threats and help employ high levels of security. Recently, DENSO WAVE EUROPE has introduced the Zone-D to clients outside of Asia as well. And thus, the laser sensor has been installed in more areas already. Bradshaw: “We are looking forward to protecting more companies and people with our innovative Zone-D.”

For the European market, DENSO WAVE EUROPE is the contact point for all enquiries on QR Codes, mobile data collection, handheld terminals, and scanners. The durable and robust terminals and scanners manufactured by DENSO are to be found in storage, logistics, at the POS, in production, and field & sales automation applications.

Short and informative video clips about the terminals, scanners, and solutions from DENSO WAVE EUROPE can now be viewed on YouTube. The clips include the 20th anniversary of the QR Code, a company presentation, and introductions to the various devices for mobile data capture such as the BHT-1500, BHT-1400 and the GT20 scanner.
