The expert lecture by Maria Mishunicheva & Catalin Stefu, Sales & Business Development Managers at EM Microelectronic, at the Think WIOT Day Wireless IoT Technologies elaborates that circular economy requires new technology for identification labels – the technology able to allow seamless circular product flow between the brand and the consumer, from the first to second-hand customer. Classical UHF RFID labels proved their efficiency in a linear, pay-per-product consumption model. UHF RFID is only partially efficient in a new, circular pay-per-use consumption model.
This is where RAINFC technology by EM Microelectronic comes in, offering an end-to-end product traceability starting from the brand’s supply chain, to the consumers home and accompanying a product along its journey to the second hand market and back to the brand, for recycling or recommerce.

RAIN RFID + NFC = RAINFC
EM Microelectronic, an entity of the Swatch Group, develops and produces RAINFC technology in Switzerland. RAINFC is embedded in a miniature, low-power integrated circuit branded em|echo-V. Maria and Catalin will be presenting on how the em|echo-V integrated circuit enables RFID labels with new levels of traceability and visibility beyond the Point-of-Sales, where the visibility of the UHF label stops.
RAINFC is the abbreviation for RAIN RFID technology, used for long-range reading, and NFC, a technology allowing consumer communication with a product via a smartphone. “RAINFC combining both technologies on a single chip, thanks to a unique and consistent product identification via both interfaces, allows one product tag to address all possible applications throughout the lifecycle” explains Catalin Stefu.
“A RAINFC tag connected to the digital identity links brands to the first and second hand consumers, expanding brand equity to a whole new demographic segment, that was never before accessible”, adds Maria Mishunicheva.
