NFC-Enabled E-Price Tags at Colruyt Save 90 Tons of Paper

Colruyt focuses on electronic price tags, dynamic pricing, the reduction of transport costs and the reduction of the ecological footprint.

With the introduction of almost three million NFC-enabled Vision Smart Labels in 243 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, Colruyt is reducing paper consumption and eliminating the need for weekly label changes. Additionally, a digital link between products and customers is established via the NFC interface.

The Colruyt chain of stores advertises by guaranteeing to offer the lowest price for each product at all times. The supermarket chain has a total of 243 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg.

Process Requirements

A Colruyt Lowest Price branch needs about 13,000 price tags per year. Of these, 4,000 have to be changed weekly. Around 90 million tons of paper are required to produce the approximately 75 million price tags. Colruyt's goal is to guarantee all customers that every product is offered at the lowest price at all times.

Objective

  • Fast reaction to price changes
  • Reduction of transport costs
  • Reduction of the ecological footprint

Solution

With the transition to electronic labels, including NFC interface and integrated LED display, immediate reactions to unplanned price changes are possible spontaneously and promptly. The high transport costs are also simultaneously reduced. The delivery of paper labels is no longer necessary. Manual error susceptibility is eliminated and employees gain time for customer service and sales activities.

Furthermore, with NFC smartphones and simple "tapping" of the electronic price labels, customers can generate additional product information or display time-limited promotions. The integrated LED display serves as a visual indicator. Store employees are thus informed that stocks need to be replenished.

Advantages

  • Prompt reaction to price changes
  • Reduction of paper consumption
  • Reduction of transport costs
  • Visual indicator of stock levels
  • Time saving for employees
  • Flexibility and energy saving
  • Display of product information on NFC smartphones

Outlook

  • Making Collect & Go reservations more efficient in future
