Joaneo’s Paper-based Tags Excels in a Number of Use Cases

Paper Tags Find Wide Applications in the Music Industry, for Tamper Loops and in Pharma Applications!

Joaneo is a Luxembourg-based brand manufacturing RFID, UHF and NFC antennas and inlays. Two of their unique selling points are the use of paper as the main substrate for tags, and the capacity to offer an antenna design tailored to the needs of the clients. This value proposition has appealed to a number of companies who are interested in reducing PET in their products or in creating customized antenna designs.

Reviving Music Cassettes through NFC Technology

TapTape, a German start-up, approached Joaneo with the wish to sell music and audio books as a physical product again in the digital age. The collaboration resulted in the creation of a MusiCard: a small booklet including a nicely visible antenna designed in the shape of a music cassette, printed on transparent paper. Customers activate the imprinted NFC tag by tearing a tamper loop and tap the card to their smartphone.

The web authenticated link then immediately enables the access to the music, videos and much more content without an account or downloading any app. Since music comes in a physical package, content which was herebefore ‘only’ digital is rendered more valuable. Customers can easily share it or collect it just like a CD. Another fascinating point about this use case, says Scott Garlick, Head of Sales & Marketing at Joaneo, is “that RFID is a necessary enabler and not only an auxiliary. I open up the product and get access to it through RFID/NFC. This is unique.”

PET Inlay in Tamper Loops Replaced by Paper

Tamper loops are generally used in plastic seals on high-end food or beverage products and in the medical industry. Breaking the plastic seal and thus setting off the tamper loop can be difficult, however. A twisted or otherwise stretched seal could be evidence of tamper or simply of a failed attempt to open the container.

To stay on the safe side, the product is usually disposed of, which is wasteful and costs businesses money. Joaneo provides a paper-based NFC tamper loop which sidesteps these issues. Paper tears easily, and in the event of genuine tampering, the problem can be tracked back to the source.

Joaneo also worked with Health-IT and BioneXt Lab to design and print a UHF inlay on a paper substrate. This label ensures full traceability of test tubes by giving each one a unique ID, as well as security and web authentication of patient data. Each tube’s IC can be securely programmed with the patient’s full name and other details. There is no need for nurses or lab workers to scan test tubes manually. This is now an automated process as tubes can be bulk read. Efficiency has increased and human error greatly reduced.

Joaneo’s antennas and inlays are designed and produced in line with clients needs. The choice of substrate, ink and design depends on each client application. In order to facilitate discussions with clients and keep exploring new possibilities, Joaneo’s team is looking for new talent who would be eager to be part of the evolution to print electronics on paper.
