Webinar: How to Track Wine Cases in the Supply Chain

Wine Industry Achieves Full Traceability with IoT Trackers

The wine supply chain contains many logistics companies, distributors and retailers. Cases and bottles change hands several times. Technologies like NFC or RFID become difficult to deploy. Automatic LPWAN tracking devices for wine cases are the solution. Nicolas Moulin, Founder and President of La Vie Du Vin, explains how to track wine from winery to consumer.

Monitoring Wine Aging Factors under Real Market Conditions

Temperature, humidity, light and shock influence wine aging. These factors are difficult to control in the supply chain. Wine quality deteriorates as a result of poor handling during storage or transport. Consumers will blame the brand for poor taste.

“Seamless tracking checks how real market conditions affect the wine”, says Nicolas Moulin. “Use of real data ensures the wine tastes as intended. Market data also helps to price bottles depending on rarity for example.”

15 Feb 2024 - 5. Think Day Livestream 2024: Wireless IoT Technologies

Wineries apply the LPWAN trackers in wine cases and monitor the aging conditions. The trackers use Sigfox and LoRaWAN technology. Data transmission occurs every three hours. A dashboard displays the recorded information. In the future, a miniaturized tracker for bottles will be available.

Wine Case Location Tracking

Another challenge are parallel markets and grey markets in the wine industry. Wineries sell bottles to distributors and have no visibility of the consumer.

“IoT trackers can detect the location and opening of wine cases”, explains Nicolas Moulin. “They record the journey of each wine case through the supply chain. Wineries can prove and measure if parallel markets exist and if distributors fulfill regional contracts.”

Real Wine Tracking Use Cases and Best Practice

Nicolas Moulin will present use cases from the wineries Chateau Pape Clement and Philipponnat Champagne. Learn how they:

  • Guarantee high and consistent wine quality
  • Improve customer experience
  • Prove product authenticity
  • Monitor wine aging conditions
  • Achieve full traceability
