Pepperl+Fuchs Actively Involved in omlox Development

Standardized Transmission of RFID Location Data!

Location Information Provided Independently of Manufacturer and Technology

The core component of the omlox standard is the location middleware (omlox-hub) via which various technologies such as UWB RTLS, GPS or even RFID, location information is merged and made available to applications via standardized APIs.

"RFID systems provide location information via omlox when objects are identified at a reader," explains Sascha Päschel, RFID Product Manager, Pepperl+Fuchs. "The installation location of the reader is known. An RFID-tagged object is located during the reading process. This information is made available to backend systems via an omlox hub."

The technology standard is managed by the industry association Profibus & Profinet International. The objective: further development, promotion and dissemination of Profinet, Profibus, IO-Link and omlox. Pepperl+Fuchs is a member of the omlox working group.

"Pepperl+Fuchs is involved in the exchange about omlox applications. For us, this includes RFID in particular," emphasizes Sascha Päschel. "Some of our devices are already omlox-connected. These transmit standardized data to the omlox hub."

But how do users benefit from the omlox standard? And what is the difference to RTLS? Sascha Päschel comments: "RTLS uses active transponders with batteries. These require maintenance, and the initial investment is comparatively high. Depending on the environment, integration is more difficult."

"A passive RFID system is more cost-effective," Päschel continues. "The derivation of location information is an additional advantage. And for certain applications, this location accuracy is sufficient. One example is the booking of incoming goods. The identification of goods or transport containers via RFID in conjunction with direction recognition is completely sufficient here to automatically book goods receipt or warehouse access."
