License Plate Production and Marking in Senegal
The Republic of Senegal is a state in western Africa with over 16 million inhabitants and an area of 200,000 square kilometers. The capital is the metropolis of Dakar in the west of the country. Every year, the population increases by almost three percent. At the same time, an increasing number of people are moving from rural to urban areas.
At the request of the national Ministry of Infrastructure, Land Transport and Development (French: Ministère de Infrastructures, des Transports Terrestres et du Désenclavement – in short, MITTD), the Republic of Senegal wanted to optimize the registration and inspection of vehicle registration plates in 2018. The aim of the project: a uniform process from the registration to the inspection of vehicles. Together with its partner company Gemalto, Tönnjes decided to set up its first own production site in Dakar to supply 20 licensed embossing shops in the country with licence plate blanks in the following years.
The production site is equipped with a modern production line and a marking line in order to meet the Senegalese government's license plate specifications. The location is intended to be the central starting point for all future orders in West Africa.

Process Requirements
The MITTD requires the solution to correctly identify each and every license plate in order to improve control of the vehicle tax. For this purpose, the license plates must be equipped with a barcode, a QR-Code, and an identification number. A counterfeit protection is also required.
The production of license plates, the registration of individual vehicles and the inspection of vehicles is required to be carried out in a single, transparent process.

The MITTD Solution
The MITTD Senegal uses license plates that are equipped with a QR-Code, a barcode and an identification number. The license plates are produced in the joint venture “Afriplaque”, which was founded by Tönnjes and SOPRE.
The production facility is located in Senegal. Plate blanks are delivered to 20 licensed embossing facilites. The production facility is equipped with an automated production line and a marking line.
A label printer with an integrated dispensing unit and a stacking unit are used, as well as a marking laser. The marking line completes the reflexive safety signs, thereby fulfilling the government's registration plate specifications. The license plates have an identification number as well as a QR code, which is repeated on the back of the labels and supplemented by a barcode.
The labels of the license plates are read using barcode readers and the authenticity of the license plates is verified.
