The company, which was founded in 2001 as part of the Bayer Group, now a subsidiary of Chempark operator Currenta, offers logistical services for chemicals, hazardous goods, and substances. Around 1,200 employees work at the three sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen, and Krefeld-Uerdingen.
The transport and storage of hazardous substances are subject to strict international and national regulations regarding the equipment of storage zones, prohibitions on storing certain substances together, and explosion protection requirements. Regulations on storage duration and temperature must also be obeyed.
Failure to comply with legal regulations on the transport and storage of hazardous substances generally results in administrative violations which can be penalized with fines in the five-figure range or, in extreme cases, even with imprisonment.
A higher proportion of automation not only enhances warehouse processes, but is also a safety factor that should not be underestimated, especially since about 65% of the goods we transport and store are dangerous goods and hazardous substances. Possible accidents with chemical substances in the warehouse would have devastating consequences. The more automated storage processes are, the lower the risk for employees and for the environment.
Chemion is committed to technical innovations. An RFID solution for empty containers at the Chemion site in Chempark Leverkusen is used to store and retrieve hazardous goods containers.
The application, which is based on the LF frequency, reduces the manual effort involved in container management, as the tagged containers are automatically recognized. The security of the processes is increased by an SAP-based warehouse management, since confusions of the containers can be eliminated.
