One of the world’s leading application- oriented research institutions for microelectronic and IT system solutions and services, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS researches technologies for sensor technology, data transmission technology, data analysis methods and the exploitation of data as part of data-driven services and their accompanying business models.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted by 72 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. Fraunhofer IIS is is the largest of all Fraunhofer Institutes. Founded in 1985 in Erlangen, it now has 13 locations in 10 cities and more than 900 employees.

Positioning, Networks and Supply Chain Services

Fraunhofer IIS possesses outstanding expertise in the fields of cognitive sensor technologies and audio and media technologies. The results of our research in cognitive sensor technologies find application in the following fields in particular:

We develop suitable smart object technologies such as RFID, wireless sensor networks and real-time positioning and navigation systems and transfer them into practice.

With the Supply Chain Service Know how, we come up with future technologies and applications for the Internet of Things, industry 4.0 and connected mobility. Solutions are based on communication, positioning and sensor technology using local application logic and process knowledge, either on mobile platforms or cyber-physical systems. These developments lead to greater efficiency in production and intralogistics process flows and allow for the gathering and analysis of production data.
