More efficiency, safety and traceability with RFID in tires!
Lecture by Christophe Duc on March 17th
Christophe Duc, RFID Initiative Leader, Michelin, will be giving a lecture on March 17th on the topic of "Michelin to Connect All Passenger Car Tires by 2023".
RFID-tagged tires will thus be connected to the entire ecosystem. The result: Optimized tire management throughout the entire product lifecycle – starting at the factory and ending at the end of the tire's lifespan. RFID, through unique tire identification, creates opportunities to enhance driver experience. Coupled with Tire Mounted Sensors, the condition of the car tire could be reported at an early stage to the maintenance system installed in the car.

Monitoring the Entire Product Lifecycle with RFID
By 2023, Michelin will equip all passenger car tires with RFID. With the help of the RFID chip, information on the service life of the tire can be determined. It is a strong lever to improve efficiency and enhance quality and trust throughout the entire tire lifecycle: for tire manufacturers, country authorities, car manufacturers, dealers, end-users and for end of life treatment.
Already bringing value on the whole chain
“Embedded RFID in tires is a reality in 2021. We are already working with car manufacturers on core use cases such as logistics, inventory management, tire and wheel assembly, vehicle development and production, aftersales. More and more car manufacturers specify RFID as a standard identification system for their tires.
With the most advanced car manufacturers, we are also working on advanced features: the vehicle would use RFID to know at any moment which tires are on the vehicle and adapt electronics accordingly” Says Christophe Duc.
In the future, Michelin is convinced that RFID will not only be an enabler to connect tires to their ecosystem but also a core enabler to improve circular economy.
