Handheld devices have long been a staple within the supply chain, to ensure warehouse staff are equipped with real-time connectivity to host systems and information, to increase accuracy and to enhance productivity. Starting in January 2024, CAEN RFID is offering a RAIN RFID sled reader which does all that, and more: it gives mobile workers the full functionality of an RFID reader through their smartphones or other mobile devices.

The fIDo RAIN RFID Sled Reader
The fIDo is a RAIN RFID sled reader of CAEN RFID’s easy2read© product line. It has an integrated antenna for long range applications. The reader hosts an internal rechargeable battery and can operate both in wired mode, using a USB cable, or in wireless mode through the BLE/Bluetooth interface. The radio frequency core of the reader is based on the Impinj E710 IC.
Thanks to the Bluetooth communication interface, the fIDo is a perfect add-on for any Bluetooth or BLE enabled host such as a PC, a smartphone, a PDA or a tablet for RAIN RFID readings. The reader is compatible with Windows 8/10, Windows CE/Mobile, Android and iOS operating systems. The device provides the maximum usage legibility, including the HID profile for keyboard emulation. The read range extends to 5 meters.
Ease of Use
fIDo is very comfortable to use. As a single-handed lightweight extended device, it is convenient to use with one hand and has an ergonomic form factor. The SP-Connect SPC+ mounting adapter makes it easy to fix a wide range of smartphones with dedicated phone cases to the sled. fIDo also embeds a wireless charging transmitter to charge the smartphone without the need to detach it from the reader.
The reader itself is battery powered with a battery run-time of 12 hours and more, or an estimated 100,000 tag readings. In standby, the battery lasts for over 50 days. The battery charging time is 4 hours 15 min. with 2 A AC/DC power supply.
