Smart Water Management

Lecturer: Peter Robinson, Head Of Engineering, Scottish Canals

Title: Smart Water Management in Glasgow

Content:

    • What is the North Glasgow Integrated Water Management System (NGIWMS) programme?
    • Smart systems to manage real time water levels on 19th Century Infrastructure in a changing climate
    • Storm predictions to mitigate impact of flooding
    • Expanding the system to create city wide opportunities

According to forecasts, heavy rainfall will become a more common occurrence in the city of Glasgow. The north of the city is particularly at risk of flooding, leading to large areas remaining undeveloped.

In the lecture, Peter Robinson explains how the smart canal system reduces flooding risk in the city of Glasgow. The fill level of the canal is monitored in real time using sensors. Heavy rain is predicted using weather data. The water level of the canal is lowered prior to heavy rainfall, freeing up more storage capacity for surface runoff and preventing flooding.
