The DF tags available in the form of a wet inlay or a label combine the two technologies on a single chip with a common unique product ID (GS1 Serialized Global Trade Item Number) and one memory shared between the two interfaces. The new LAB ID dual frequency tag portfolio puts together the advantages of the two technologies.
Accurate track and trace for supply chain management, improving stock accuracy and efficiency of the warehouse and distribution centre is possible thanks to the RAIN RFID technology, while NFC enables multiple ways to interact with the consumer and new digital services. DF tags feature a web-authentication capability and tamper proof to allow consumers anytime to check whether the product is authentic and whether it was previously open or not.
Dual frequency concept allows product identifier, SGTIN, to be accessible on both interfaces.
What is the benefit of a dual-frequency concept for the consumer in a retail environment?
The consumer can now choose an alternative product size or colour directly in the fitting room of the physical retail store. From the other side, the brand gets a full visibility into which product and its exact SKU consumer engages with, and in which place of the world, as any consumer engagement event directly provides the GS1 SGTIN to the brand’s web server.
What is the benefit of a dual-frequency concept for the retail brand?
The brand may offer new consumer services, such as smartphone-based check-out and may profile consumer behaviours in full respect of GDPR. Checking the product identifier via NFC while registering customer returns, the brand can also verify the authenticity of returns and seamlessly re-integrate authentic goods back to the supply chain.
NFC complements and extends RAIN RFID, making DF tags a holistic omnichannel solution. Via the RAIN communication interface for raw material management, production visibility and in-store operations, such as inventory or product returns; and via NFC interface for consumer related services: pre-purchase consumer engagement through product storytelling, similar product proposition, registering physical product in digital “wish list”, sending out regular reminders on deferred purchasing; as well as consumer engagement after the point of sales - across product utilisation and interaction at home.
NFC digitalise in-store consumer experience with the multiple endless aisle opportunities and smart-phone based check-out, helping to avoid queue for cashier.
Personalisation of both interfaces of DF tags is a one-step procedure, using only one chosen interface for both memory partitions – for example RAIN RFID, using a standard RAIN RFID printer and encoder hardware.
The LAB ID dual frequency tags might be customized for the very specific customer needs in terms of tag rendering, personalisation, configuration and privacy settings.
EM | ECHO - V integrated circuit

Why DF Tags for Retail Today?
DF tag concept responds to the “new normal” of the post COVID-19 retail, that has faced spectacular shifts in consumer behaviour. With closed or partially open physical stores, even the most reluctant consumers had to try the new omnichannel purchasing models in spring 2020. Post-pandemic retail has to adapt to those new consumer behaviours: to prioritize digital-first and omnichannel strategies versus physical ones, to develop distinctive and seamless digital customer experience versus faceto- face in-store practises, to reinvent physical store and its functions in omnichannel strategy.
Millennial consumers, born as “digital natives” and representing today a large segment of population, constantly challenge retail practices. Millennials are careful with their money and they prioritise online shopping. They will search for online product information and ratings before making a decision to buy, reaching out this information via their smartphones. Millennials are conscious on product sustainability, labour and brands’ ethical principles. Shopping for them means being able to transition effortlessly from smartphone to physical store in a search for the best product offer.
This is how the LAB ID DF tags thanks to dual frequency concept and integrated web-authentication capability becomes a holistic omnichannel RFID solution, efficient through the whole product lifecycle. DF tags offer brands the required visibility in the post-pandemic retail on distribution channels and on product supply, from manufacturing to the consumer and back to the supply chain, if the products are returned. All while guaranteeing consumer privacy, as well as product authenticity and preventing grey market.
DF tags gratify millennial consumers with the same level of product information and reviews, as they would get online, with the ability of touching and trying the physical product in-store.
DF tags support sustainability practices by allowing the manufacturer to track the product travel and the consumer to verify the corresponding CO2 footprint for taking purchasing decision.
