In the face of the chip shortage, RFID hardware expert B-Id has reacted quickly and built up a stock of critical ICs. This way, the company ensures the availability of supply for RFID hardware products. Custom manufacturing of LF, HF and UHF transponders is still possible.

Long-term Planning Cushions Negative Impact of Chip Shortage
A wide network of IC suppliers enables a large selection of different ICs, which are used in the production of B-Id. The delivery times for these ICs vary greatly. For Mifare DESFire ICs, for example, the delivery time is one year, while other ICs remain available at short notice. "At the beginning of the chip shortage, B-Id acted immediately and asked customers for annual requirements lists," explains Erhard König, Sales, B-Id. "For this reason, it was possible to purchase critical ICs on an as-needed basis. There were also cases where we helped customers find alternative chips and qualify them to meet customer requirements. The goal was to continue to provide our customers with a product that could be integrated into their system that would allow our customers to continue to have a viable business."
Transponders in Various Frequencies Remain Available
B-Id is focused on the custom manufacturing of RFID hardware. Products are available in LF, HF and UHF as well as in frequency combinations. Despite difficult market conditions, customer-specific solutions can still be implemented. Erhard König expresses confidence: "Despite difficult circumstances, B-Id is positive about the year 2022. Thanks to the cooperation with partners and customers, it is possible to continue to maintain the supply chains. However, a normalization of the situation by the fourth quarter of 2022 would be desirable."
Development of New Solutions and Products Despite IC Crisis
An expansion of the product portfolio was possible for B-Id despite difficult chip supply: The new RFID cable transponder CBT1818 is available in LF and HF variants and designed for use in harsh environments. "The new transponder is heat- and water-resistant as well as UV-resistant, and the material used absorbs even hard impacts," explains Erhard König. "With the RFID cable transponder, simple securing, marking and serialization of cable harnesses is possible."
Apart from RFID hardware such as cable transponders, the company offers pure molded parts made of plastic, aluminum and zinc.
