MB ATECH Brings E-Mobility Solutions and Giga Factories
At a glance:
- New research division MB ATECH
- Goal: Turnkey Battery & fuel cell solutions
- Rapid prototyping for turnkey solutions
- Preparation for Giga factories for Battery & fuel cells
Mühlbauer’s technical competence in RFID, high volume converting, and semiconductor experience have led to the creation of MB ATECH, which is a new research division, which focuses on eMobility equipment production. This division is among the fastest growing in the entire group. It provides advanced production equipment and turnkey assembly solutions for fuel cells, battery cells, and battery management systems.
eMobility at MB ATECH
All eMobility projects at Mühlbauer take place under the flag of MB ATECH, which stands for Mühlbauer Advanced Technologies. Together with strong partners in the eMobility industry, MB ATECH has developed fuel cell & battery cell production capabilities and developed unique production lines. An important goal, which Mühlbauer pursues with this division is to become independent from foreign manufacturers for eMobility projects. “The Western world is hungry and needs to gain more independence in battery and fuel cell supply chain”, says Viktor Poc, Senior business development manager for eMobility.
Turnkey Solution for Battery Equipment
MB ATECH provides the complete cell assembly processes, including all developing procedures. The Mühlbauer Parts & Systems Division manufactures the mechanical components for all of the production equipment, which is then assembled internally into complete production lines. Rapid prototyping is a crucial element within that. “This is such an important point, when focusing on Research & Development, as we do”, explains Viktor Poc. “We take our engineering ideas, release them for production, components are manufactured overnight and we can continue our work with it in the morning.” This is one part of a turnkey solution because it significantly improves production speed.
Targeting the Giga Challenge
To build up substantial production capacities for batteries and fuel cells, Mühlbauer has decided to start building Giga factories with extremely high production capacities. Whilst standard battery production facilities might contain few production lines, Giga factories are to feature 10 and more, surely depending on their final capacity. This way, very fast growth and build-up of equipment must be achieved in a short space of time to meet all the market challenges.
The first step towards handling the scope of such projects was to build a Giga Center in Roding. It was created between Nov 2022 to May 2023 and is a new assembly hall in which the new production lines will be built.
