RFID Windshield Labels Enhanced for New Applications!
Auto-ID, passive HF and UHF specialist GERA-IDENT has been developing customized solutions since 2005. This expertise is now being applied in a new area of application. Based on its windshield label technology, the company has developed a special, extremely resistant RFID label for tagging solar panels. Thanks to the new label, the production control and maintenance of solar plants can be managed with RFID.
Challenges in Solar Panel Tagging
"The use of RFID is extremely difficult in the production environment of solar panels," explains Ramin Hassan, Managing Director of GERA-IDENT. "The label has to be applied to glass in the panel itself. In the further production process, various foils and solar modules are added, after which the module is pressed and framed. The integrated label is subjected to enormous pressure and temperature strain."
But that's not all: if the label is too large, the glass will shatter during the pressing process. The label must be small and thin, but at the same time resistant to temperature and pressure, and must function in an environment with metal and conductive materials inside the solar panel.
Solution Development Based on the Windshield Label Technology
"After the customer inquiry, discussions began on how the use case could be handled - using either HF or UHF RFID. Here we were able to build on our experience with windshield labels and develop new solution ideas," recalls Ramin Hassan.
Similar to the tagging of solar panels, windshield labels are also glued bottomside up onto glass. The adhesive is located above the print. UV and temperature resistance is also required for both labels.
Development of the RFID Label for Solar Panels
The result of the development process is the new UHF RFID label for solar panel tagging. The UHF labels, chip and antenna were developed by GERA-IDENT. The labels are available in white with black print and black with white print.
"The label is printed and programmed individually, after which the adhesive is applied. The customer only has to stick the label in the designated position," explains Ramin Hassan. "It was extremely difficult to find a suitable position for the label in the solar panel where the readout would work reliably - especially under the difficult ambient conditions and in the many process steps where tolerances can accumulate. Accurate placement of the label is essential for process stability."
