Flood Protection for Smart Cities
According to forecasts, heavy rainfall will become a more common occurrence in the city of Glasgow. The north of the city is particularly at risk of flooding, leading to large areas remaining undeveloped.
In the lecture, Peter Robinson will explain how the smart canal system reduces flooding risk in the city of Glasgow. The fill level of the canal is monitored in real time using sensors. Heavy rain is predicted using weather data. The water level of the canal is lowered prior to heavy rainfall, freeing up more storage capacity for surface runoff and preventing flooding.
The water management system enables land use for construction in previously flood-threatened areas, as well as the implementation of an early flood warning system.
