Where is the best place to attach the RFID label on an airbag?
RFID labels should be placed directly on the surface of automotive components. RFID labels must be positioned so that the best readability is ensured with as little interference shielding as possible. A great example of this is the airbag of a vehicle. An airbag is usually integrated into the dashboard of the car and placed in a strong metal or plastic container that has a perforation. The RFID label can either be placed on the metal container, in which case on-metal RFID labels are necessary, or on the airbag cover itself.
Placing the RFID on the airbag cover means that it will be placed in the middle of the container, on the outer surface of the cover with a 5-10 cm metal-free area. This makes it the ideal position for RFID readability. You can sit in the passenger seat of the car with an RFID reader and be able to read the RFID label hidden in the dashboard.
What needs to be considered when choosing the correct RFID label for automotive components?
For automotive applications and components, it is crucial that the RFID tags and labels comply with the OEM label specifications. Each OEM has its own unique specifications and requirements and the experts here at ALT Technologies have comprehensive knowledge on the majority of OEM specifications worldwide.
It is also important to consider the type of adhesive used to apply the tag onto the surface of the airbag. RFID labels placed on curtain airbags that are positioned at the sides of vehicles should not be detachable once the airbag is deployed. In order to ensure that the RFID labels do not fly off, a proper adhesive must be used.
